چکیده

Studies in this and other laboratories have disclosed a variety of starch-digesting rumen organisms, including Streptococcu bouis (Hungate et al., 1952), several cellulolytic strains (Hungate, 1950), and various non-cellulolytic bacteria (Gall et al., 1947; Gall and Huhtanen, 1951; Huhtanen and Gall, 1953a, b; Bryant and Burkey, 1953a,b; Jayko, 1953; McPherson, 1953; van der Wath, 1948) as well as protozoa of the genera Entodinium and Diplodinium (Ferber, 1928) and Isotriha (Gutierrez, 1955, Sugden and Oxford, 1952). Starch digestion by most of the bacteria has been discovered after they have been isolated on other substrates. It seemed of interest to investigate whether use of starch in initial agar dilution series would disclose starch-digesting bacteria not previously encountered. Starch digesters tentatively identified as S. bovi8 and as the weakly cellulolytic, butyric acid-producing rods (Hungate, 1950) were encountered and, in addition, rod shaped bacteria different from any previously described amylolytic organisms, and considered to be a new species, Bacteroides amylophilus.

Nutritional Interdependence Among Rumen Bacteria, Bacteroides amylophilus, Megasphaera elsdenii, and Ruminococcus albus.

Nutritional interdependence among three representatives of rumen bacteria, Bacteroides amylophilus, Megasphaera elsdenii, and Ruminococcus albus, was studied with a basal medium consisting of minerals, vitamins, cysteine hydrochloride, and NH(4). B. amylophilus grew well in the basal medium supplemented with starch and produced branched-chain amino acids after growth ceased. When cocultured wit...

Production ofHalothermotolerant α-Amylase from aModerately Halophilic Bacterium, NesterenkoniaStrain F.

Production of extracellular amylase was demonstrated under conditions of high salinity in aerobically cultivated culture of a newly isolated moderately halophilic Gram-positive coccus, designated strain F in basal medium containing peptone from meat, yeast extract, NaCl (7% w/v) and starch. Biochemical and physiological characterization along with 16S rRNA sequence analysis placed F in the genu...

Comparison of the sphingolipid content of rumen Bacteroides species.

Ten strains of Bacteroides ruminicola were found to contain phosphosphingolipids. Four strains of Bacteroides amylophilus and one strain each of Bacteroides succinogenes and Bacteroides sp. were devoid of phosphosphingolipids.

Production and Characteristics of Raw-Starch-Digesting alpha-Amylase from a Protease-Negative Aspergillus ficum Mutant.

Mutational experiments were carried out to decrease the protease productivity of Aspergillus ficum IFO 4320 by using N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine. A protease-negative mutant, M-33, exhibited higher alpha-amylaseactivity than the parent strain under submerged culture at 30 degrees C for 24 h. About 70% of the total alpha-amylase activity in the M-33 culture filtrate was adsorbed onto sta...
